OVH wishes you all the best for 2018, and presents its ambitions for this year


Can you still accelerate when you already think you’re going full-speed ahead? The answer is yes. In 2017, OVH had a lot of news to share. Our teams were able to learn from both the successes and challenges we experienced, so that we could strengthen the building blocks for our cloud solutions to infinity (internationally) and beyond (because innovation never stops). We’ve compiled a non-exhaustive list of OVH’s main achievements in 2017, along with its five main ambitions for this year.






The Next Level strategic plan


“This year will be OVH’s 18th anniversary – a mark of our long-term prosperity. This is it – we have finished structuring ourselves. Even though we have already structured a lot of things, we are continuing to accelerate – and for me, this is just the beginning. OVH is starting a new chapter in our life.”



At the fifth OVH Summit on 17th November last year, Octave Klaba announced the Next Level strategic plan, which aims to boost OVH’s status as a global leader in cloud services. In line with the group’s first (high) resolution, our product offerings are being progressively re-organised, and have been split into three new categories: OVHcloud (highly scalable solutions for critical applications), OVHspirit (high-performance dedicated servers with the best quality/price ratio), and OVHmarket (all web hosting plans, domain names, email and telecommunication solutions, grouped into one brand).






The 1000-talent (at once) objective


At the end of 2016, Octave Klaba announced on Twitter that OVH had more than 1500 employees worldwide. Nine months later, the group announced their goal of hiring 1000 new employees to strengthen their teams globally, and opened the OVH Careers recruitment platform - which is currently only available in French, but will soon be launched in other languages. In order to find and welcome this new talent, OVH is continuing to develop its international presence (Singapore, Sydney, Warsaw, Frankfurt, London, Bordeaux, Nantes, and Tour de Batignolles in Paris) and is expanding its sites in Roubaix, Poland and Germany.



Welcoming our US CEO


On the 15th March, OVH recruited our executive committee for OVH US, with Russ Reeder (ex GoDaddy) as its CEO. This marked the first stage of our roadmap as we expand our presence across the US and the Asia-Pacific region, followed shortly by the high-profile acquisition of vCloud Air, VMware’s cloud business. This acquisition helped accelerate our growth in the US – but above all, it allows us to offer our customers access to HCX (Hybrid Cloud eXchange) technology. With this resource, OVH customers can now migrate their solutions within our datacentres, without experiencing any service interruptions. Since our new business in the US is a legally independent entity, all other areas of the OVH group are not subject to the Patriot Act.






Commitment to data protection


2018 is also the year that the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) comes into effect - which is a significant milestone for all European companies involved in data storage and processing. OVH is progressing with its compliance checklist, which was marked last July by changes to both its General terms and conditions of service and its Special conditions in France, with similar adaptations anticipated soon for terms and conditions in the UK. A series of documents were thoroughly reviewed to reaffirm OVH’s commitment to protecting its customers’ personal data, and formalising certain principles integrated by the European leader of cloud services: transparency with regard to the location of data, and its refusal to sub-contract services that would involve third parties accessing data stored by users.



These new General terms and conditions of service are based on recommendations from the CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Providers in Europe) code of conduct, an association of European cloud players initiated by OVH. This code of conduct was also one of the first to be released as a result of the GDPR. Its aim is to provide a benchmark for the application of the GDPR for both cloud providers and their customers, in order to support the emergence of a European digital market.






Always more open


Among the other commitments that form key parts of OVH’s identity, the company actively supports freedom of choice for companies with regard to the technology they use. Since cloud-based technology is the future of IT, OVH is working towards an open cloud, without any limits or barriers other than those related to data security for cloud providers. A reversible, interoperable cloud that provides customers with proprietary, isolated environments. This is what is promised by the Open Cloud Foundation, an organisation formed by digital players from all areas (suppliers, users, research centres, public organisations) to defend an open cloud, in contrast to the vendor lock-in policies that have appeared on the market. Announced by Laurent Allard at the OVH Summit 2017, the Open Cloud Foundation held an event last December, and should be fully operational before the end of the first quarter of 2018.



OVH stands for an open cloud, to the point that the lines of code for its Control Panel were made public last summer.






By stepping back and looking at the bigger picture with these milestones, we can gain a better understanding of how each of the achievements from 2017 have helped the group decide on the direction they will take in the future.
